ArcheoVirtual is the multimedia exhibition dedicated to digital applications and virtual archaeology projects presented by the Digital Heritage Innovation Laboratory of the Institute of Sciences of Cultural Heritage of the National Research Council (CNR ISPC), in the context of the Mediterranean Archaeological Tourism Exchange (BMTA) in Paestum, which will be held this year from 30 October to 2 November.

The exhibition is a window on the discipline that deals with studying, interpreting, understanding and communicating archaeological heritage and its context through a process of data acquisition, reconstruction, and continuous verification. Each year ArcheoVirtual tackles a different theme, in line with current issues and the scientific world, through a selection of innovative interactive applications and explanatory videos, selected through an international call for entries. These themes will also be addressed and discussed in the workshop attended by experts in the field.

The 2025 edition is dedicated to
Digital Applications and Cultural Tourism

The development of digital applications for the enhancement of Cultural Heritage has brought about a major transformation in cultural tourism, including through a widespread dissemination of more or less valid, effective, costly initiatives and virtual solutions online and on site. Such applications are usually conceived as a support tool, complementing, not replacing, the visit experience. But how far has this objective been achieved? How have visits to heritage sites changed? To what extent do virtual museums really contribute to stimulating cultural tourism? And what is the relationship between the two elements, how can they complement each other by compensating for each other’s limitations? These questions (and more) will be answered with a review of ad-hoc conceived applications that have focused or are focusing on the integration between the online digital experience and the physical experience at the museum or site.
